Mexican cuisine offers many flavorful dishes perfect for a summer BBQ. Without further ado, here is a step-by-step guide on how to plan a summer BBQ with Mexican recipes:
a) Plan your menu: Mexican cuisine is known for its bold flavours and colourful dishes. Consider including various dishes such as grilled meats, tacos, salads, and sides. Here are some traditional Mexican dishes that are perfect for a BBQ:
For the Grill
- Carne Asada: Grilled marinated beef served with tortillas, guacamole, and pico de gallo
- Pollo Asado: Grilled marinated chicken served with lime wedges, cilantro, and salsa
- Elote: Grilled Mexican street corn on the cob with mayo, cotija cheese, chilli powder, and lime
Get the Tacos Ready:
- Tacos al Pastor: Pork marinated in achiote paste and pineapple juice, served with diced onions, cilantro, and pineapple chunks on soft tortillas.
Sides and Extras:
- Guacamole: Mashed avocados mixed with diced tomatoes, onions, lime juice, and cilantro
- Salsa: A variety of fresh tomato-based salsas, such as pico de gallo or salsa verde
- Frijoles charros: Mexican-style cowboy beans with bacon, onion, and chilli peppers
b) Prep your ingredients: Once you have decided on your menu, it’s time to start preparing your ingredients. Some dishes can be made in advance, while others must be cooked on the day of the BBQ. For example, you can marinate your meats the night before and chop your vegetables for the guacamole and salsa a few hours before the BBQ.
c) Set up your BBQ station: Ensure your grill is clean and ready. You can use an onion to clean the grill (great pro tip!). Set up a table near the BBQ with all your cooking utensils, spices, and sauces. You can also set up a buffet table with plates, napkins, and cutlery for your guests to serve themselves.
d) Create a festive atmosphere: Add some decorations to your outdoor space to create an inviting atmosphere.
e) Enjoy your Mexican BBQ: Once everything is set up, it’s time to enjoy your delicious Mexican-inspired dishes with your guests. Make sure to have plenty of drinks, such as beer, margaritas, or agua frescas, to accompany your meal.
